Worthen Arena is Becoming a Big Stage
Worthen Arena is building a strong résumé for a big-time venue. With the Harlem Globetrotters coming to Muncie it may be time to recognize the 11,000 seat capacity building as one of the premier locations for events. Let’s take a look at the evidence over the last few years besides the common Ball State men’s and women’s basketball games.
World Wrestling Entertainment
The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) hosted one of their shows in Worthen Arena back in January, 2009. The event held some of the biggest stars in the WWE including the “Big Show.” The basketball court was reconfigured for a steel cage match. Junior Evan Honeycutt was a freshman at the time when the WWE made their visit.
“I was disappointed that Jeff Hardy was not at the match but I had a great time.” Honeycutt said. “Big Show was the big loser.”
Aquire the Fire
While most students go home over spring break an annual attraction comes to Ball State. Acquire the Fire, an annual Christian concert series, visits Muncie in March. Aquire the Fire features some top Christian bands including David Crowder Band in Worthen Arena a year ago.
IHSAA State Championships
The Indiana High School Athletic Association has selected Worthen Arena to host multiple championship games. Girls and Boys Volleyball and even basketball championships have been held in Worthen if venues in Indianapolis are booked. Volleyball is extremely popular in Delaware County as multiple schools from the county typically make it to the finals. This season was no different as Muncie Central made it to the finals but lost to Penn. Other events include national high school tournaments featuring highly recruited players.
Harlem Globetrotters
The fact that the Harlem Globetrotters will perform in Worthen the same month they performed in Indianapolis speaks about where Worthen is in terms of its abilities to host big events.
“I’m excited that the Harlem Globetrotters are coming here,” sophomore Kurt Tomas said. “I will definitely be there.”
This leads to the questions about the future events that Worthen can hold and senior Matt Rogers has an idea.
“I wish Worthen could get more involved with politics,” Rogers said of the possibility of hosting political rallies. “Similar to having Obama and Palin in the vicinity last election cycle.”
